Today I discovered the built-in macro setting on my Sony a6000. When the camera's in Scene Selection mode, I can choose Macro when taking close-up shots of flowers, leaves, etc. That, plus the macro lens made for some nice photos (I think), and I didn't have to adjust the focus area myself. I like the flexible-focal spot feature, but it's not available when you're in macro-mode. Sometimes, the camera didn't focus on quite the same spot I would've chosen (see photo above), but at this stage, I'm inclined to think the camera knows better than I do - it's likely the pic turned out better this way!
